Ellen sighed. “What of it, Emma? Say what you must say for I have my work to get to.”

The maid laughed. “Oh, goodness! You have work to get to, as though the rest of this household does not work.”

Ellen passed a hand over her face. “Emma, when did I say that you do not work?”

Emma tapped her temple. “You think it because you believe that you are better than us. But look.”

She pointed at Ellen’s clothing. “You are but a lowly servant.”

“Although clothes do not maketh the man, I am well aware of my status as a servant. I have never elevated myself above anyone in this household, or anyone else. Now, please, I have work to do.”
